What Caused the January Flash Crash?

On 2 January 2019, the currency markets were hit with a flash crash. At its most extreme, the Japanese yen jumped almost 8% against the Australian dollar. It took less than 8 minutes.

Although this is now 'old news' in most traders' minds, it's still important to understand some of the reasons behind the crash and what could cause it again in the future.
